  • At the venue, participants were asked to fill in a survey, proposing topics they wanted the agents to discuss in the upcoming weeks.

“Artificial Discourse: Toward a Brave New World” is an installation piece in which three AI agents with fictional personalities created using ChatGPT engage in discussions about complex issues around us. Each agent is given attributes such as age, occupation, and personality, and is instructed to voice their opinions on the given topic. After the conversation is generated with ChatGPT, image, lip-sync, and voice cloning technologies are combined to bring the agents to life.

Using the GPT-4 model developed by OpenAI, it becomes possible to engage in role-playing by inputting prompts. We've constructed a program that utilizes three AI agents with distinct personalities and themes, allowing them to engage in discussions based on given prompts and outputting their statements as text. Using four monitors and three speakers, we project the visuals of the agents on three monitors suspended in mid-air and display the agents’ parameters on the fourth one. By aligning the monitors with the perspective of the participants, we enable them to consciously follow the dialogue of each agent, portraying them as if they were mirrors reflecting ourselves.

In this work, we focused on the sense of discomfort we feel from ChatGPT and other large language models. If we feel a sense of emptiness by listening to these AI conversations, it may be because they serve as a reflection of our own communication tendencies. Just like AI, our conversations tend to be superficial and "safe” in pursuit of an illusion of ideal communication.
