At Qosmo, we deliver a New Years greeting every year. In 2023, the theme was the Year of the Rabbit. To meet the needs at the start of the year, we created the Qosmo original "AI-Generated Rabbit Phase Calendar" using a typeface generated by image-based AI.

Since ancient times, in Japan and the Asian region, the patterns of the moon have evoked images of rabbits. This calendar is composed of the lunar cycle, rabbits, and used the image generation AI called "Stable Diffusion" for its typeface. Stable Diffusion features an "img2img" function that combines text and images to create blended transformations. In this experiment, we combined a base typeface with rabbit illustrations, specifying existing fonts to transform them into a rabbit-like style using text. In img2img, you can specify the intensity of reflecting the textual content on the input image through parameters. By varying this intensity, representing the "rabbit-likeness," we created a calendar that dynamically generates typefaces in a gradient manner to depict the waxing and waning of the moon. The calendar follows a cycle of approximately 29.5 days, with 15 levels of rabbit-likeness set for each day, resulting in the generation of a total of 2,790 typefaces. As the moon waxes, the rabbit-likeness increases, and as it wanes towards the new moon, the rabbit-likeness decreases, allowing you to see this cycle through the generated illustrations.

We explored the intersection between ancient philosophies and calendar formats by combining generative AI, aiming to push the boundaries between illustration and typography.
