Spot-if-AI: A New Chrome Extension to Detect AI-Generated Music on Spotify
We’ve released Spot‑if‑AI, a Chrome extension that detects whether songs on Spotify are AI‑generated. The source code is also available on GitHub.
In the Spotify Web Player, a meter is displayed next to each track, indicating how likely it is to have been generated by AI. The redder the meter, the higher the likelihood that the song was created using AI.
This project aims to raise awareness of the growing influx of AI‑generated music on streaming platforms.
The flood of mass‑produced AI content (“AI slop”) threatens the livelihoods of artists and dilutes the music ecosystem. We hope that by releasing this tool, we can improve transparency regarding the origins of songs, help protect artists’ revenue, and prompt platforms—many of which have ignored the issue—to take action. For example, Deezer has already begun tagging AI‑generated music on its platform, but many other services have yet to follow suit. We believe that providing this transparency is a critical first step in giving listeners the ability to shape the future of music. For more on why we started this initiative, see our blog post.
Technical Note: This release improves accuracy by applying additional training to the SONICS model (from Rahman et al., converted to ONNX by our team) to support the latest models from Suno and Udio. Notably, all processing is performed locally on the user’s machine.
